*shoves fangirling side out the window* I actually did not know Asada-sensei did the character design until I saw the ending. The guy’s been my inspiration since seventh grade. All the more reason to watch Dororo.

Dororo is a manga by the legendary Tezuka Osamu, adapted into anime and movie several times. The story follow the duo Dororo and Hyakkimaru as the latter reclaims body parts from demons.

This is one of those cases where I have nothing to jab at. Well, aside from maybe Dororo looks a bit too upbeat after getting beaten up by a gang of men. The animation and action choreography is great. The music fits. The opening theme is a blend of traditional and modern. Hyakkimaru grows more and more likable as he gradually opens up to Dororo. His development is also very detailed.

Hyakkimaru’s brother has a lot of potential and MAPPA is sure to bring the best out of him. Can’t wait to see how he’d react when he meets his brother. I’m sure this overshadowed younger kid is a thing many people relate to.

However, what the anime did best in these three episodes is Jukai. Starting from his breakup with Kaname, whom he thought of as someone close to a son, he gradually gains redemption by being a father to Hyakkimaru. This episode packs a lot of emotion.

It’s intriguing how much animation has changed in fifty years. 1969 Hyakkimaru is so beef and 2019 he looks like a standard bishonen, although for some reason he looks a hell lot more creepy. The narrative is also a lot more complex, with multi-faceted heroes and villains. Not to mention, the animation is fluid, although some traditional samurai anime shots are still used, like the static running.

All in all Dororo shows a lot of promise, and this is going to be a great season. Until next time.

Also, even if baby Hyakkimaru freaked the hell out of me, in episode three his mouth is so damn cute ❤ (It seems that developmental biology class desensitized me to a lot of things…)

…Am I the only one who finds it cute…?
