Sidonia no Kishi (Knights of Sidonia) Daikyuu Wakusei Review – The Weird and Wonderful Love Life of an Ace Pilot

Before we start I need to confess something. I actually finished the manga so this watch is just a skim-through of those scenes that have Tsumugi in them.

Planet 9 is sort of yer classic man vs alien in space. There’s an OP pilot who’s the love interest of most main girls in the story who also happens to be kinda thick about the whole romance ordeal.

The most memorable thing about Tanikaze is that he’s such a doting boyfriend and he’s so cute with Tsumugi.

I like Izana and Tsumugi. They made up for what Tanikaze lacks in terms of character… development? Tanikaze has tremendous potential to be interesting, being the clone of a former ace pilot, but Sidonia seemed to forget about that completely. I mean, who cares about identity issues, right? This is 1,000 years into the future, after all.

However, they did add an anime-only scene where Tanikaze dedicated his medal to his grandpa rather than going bang-bang with Captain like in the manga (pardon me if I remember this part wrong). Great way to end a season. Still no sign of a sequel.

However, the parts where Izana’s grandma tried to force Izana and Tanikaze together were annoying. Just saying.

What Sidonia lacks in terms of story is made up by its amazing space battle scenes and weird science trademark of Nihei Tsutomu.

Tanikaze Nagate’s love life in a nutshell (warning: contain manga spoilers):

  1. falls in love with nice girl
  2. girl dies
  3. falls in love with tissue sample of gauna made using dead girl as DNA base
  4. falls in love with daughter of said tissue sample made by impregnating her with human sperm/egg
  5. had a kid with said daughter of said tissue sample
  6. lives happily ever after
  7. his daughter went off to fight another space war

Also, I just noticed that my dorm room number is 704 like Tanikaze’s pilot number. What a coincidence.

That was Sidonia season 2. I do hope this thing gets a sequel because I cannot get enough of Tsumugi’s squishy noises.
