Yume Oukoku to Nemureru Hyaku-nin no Ouji-sama (Yume100) Game Main Story- the Idealist and the Realist

It’s been 3 years since the Yume100 anime, and I must say it gives a glimpse of what the game’s main story is like. The game itself to 8 chapters and god knows how many hours of gameplay to actually get anywhere interesting

Today I will write a summary of the climax of the game’s main story, compare it a bit to the anime, and give some of my thoughts. I know the English wiki has a lot of info already, so I’m just summarizing the chapters that are not on there.

The game’s main story begins exactly like the anime. Heroine got transported from her world and met Navi, her fluffy butler, and Avi, a prince from the kingdom of knights. Kiel is not in this game so put him aside for now. They go through all the ‘you’re a princess and you can give dreams to people and power boost to princes’ stuff, then they start on their journey to Troymare/Traumere while killing Dream Eaters along the way.

As Heroine traveled through more kingdoms, she collected more Pokemon Princes including Medi, Luke, Hinata, Byakuyo, Kairi, Shigure, and Cerus. Each has his own set of issues, which I will not go into. And guess what, she actually wakes up the princess! The title of the game makes sense now.

The first 9 chapters deal with the princess and co fighting against the “Magna Institute”, a cult that preached hopelessness as a form of defense against Dream Eaters. And apparently, it worked. People did not dare hope and dream and live like dead, so they do not attract Dream Eaters. However, it’s just wrong to live like dead, right? In the end, Heroine and co got to the big boss of the Magna Institute, an ex-doctor called Kaza. He tried to kill the princess. However, he fell down a cliff somehow and Heroine tried to yank him back. Kaza realized that he came the wrong way because of the disappointment in his own powerlessness, and used the last ounce of strength to save Heroine from falling down the cliff with him. The people of the cult were disillusioned and dared to hope again.

Here’s where it finally gets to the interesting part: they proceed to Troymare and met a mysterious dude with the ability to create Dream Eaters. They finally found the guy who started it all. Then princess and co were pulled into a long, long flashback.

It turns out that the dude was one of Heroine’s twin brother, Hope. Heroine, Hope, and the other brother whose name appeared as ‘xx’ lived a happy childhood in the walls of the Kingdom of Dreams with loving parents and a pet called Navi. However, all that was changed when the people of a Kingdom called Decil decided to start a rebellion. Somehow, they thought that the King of Dreams (heroine’s dad) had been hogging all dreams to himself and refusing to share it with the people. Therefore, they will take the ring (that the heroine used to wake up & buff the princes) and use it for themselves how they see fit.

Since Troymare was a secluded kingdom, it did not have its own SDF and no soldiers. The rebels broke through the walls into the palace. Heroine and XX managed to escape, while Hope went back to fetch Navi who was left behind in the castle. There, he ran into his parents. The King decided to go out and talk to the people himself, so that nobody else would get hurt. He also gave the ring to Hope. However, the King only got to say “People of Decil—” before the rebels sliced him and his wife in half in front of his son. The rebels then searched the corpse, and not finding the ring, went out to search for other victims.

Hope managed to escape with the ring, while the army of Alstoria (Avi’s kingdom) led by Avi’s dad crushed the rebels and took control of the situation. Hope was filled with rage and hopelessness that the people his father protected ended up killing the ones who were helping them all along. XX would ascend to the throne, but Hope, cunning as he was, did not give the ring to his twin brother and instead said that it was lost in the raid. A replica was made, and XX became the next king.

The rebels were still hiding in town, and Hope had been spying them to protect the remainder of his family and his kingdom. The rebels initiated a second raid on the castle. The army of Alstoria were gone on a mission, so nobody could save Troymare anymore. The rebels were crushing the castle, so Hope sent Heroine along with the ring to our world. He was going to get killed, but in desperate times unleashed a black fog that sucked up the rebel’s dream powers, therefore also saving his twin brother from death by the hands of the same people who killed his parents.

Hope and XX grew up. XX used his own lifespan to supply the world with dreams (because the ring was with Heroine in another world) while Hope used his Dream Eater powers to suck up dreams and aid his brother. Hope hunted down every single last rebel and put them to dreamless sleep, much to their horror.

Even by using XX’s lifespan, the dreams weakened and the royal families of different kingdoms got overthrown like crazy (including Makoto’s, if I’m not mistaken). XX still believed that he and the people of Troymare will get through it together. However, he was stabbed by one of Troymare’s nobles who had been working alongside him since he was a kid. Hope came back to see his brother bleeding to death. He lost it and unleashed the Dream Eaters (which seemed to be crying in his stead), killing everyone in the castle. Hope lost all faith in humanity, while XX tried one last time to convince him that there is still some good in people’s heart. XX died. Scarred and desperate, Hope started unleashing Dream Eaters all over the world to take back the dreams his brother spent his lifespan to create.

It’s not the end of xx yet. His soul transferred into Navi, and became the current butler for the princess. So, all along Navi was Heroine’s big bro. Figures.

Heroine was so shaken by the flashback and her family’s deaths that for a moment, she was like ‘fuck these people I’m joining Hope in the dark side and y’all who wronged my kingdom will regret the hell out of it’, but then Navi/XX brought her back to her senses.

Heroine tried to talk sense into Hope, but failing, and then we got this difficult-ass boss fight. After the grueling boss fight, Hope realized what was truly important to him and so disappeared in peace along will all Dream Eaters. In the end we know what XX’s real name is but can’t say it because if we said it, his soul will leave Navi and he’s going to die for good.

It’s really intriguing: what would the heroine have done had Navi not been there to pull her back? If you were the heroine, what would you choose? Join Hope in his cause to doom the world or forgive those who wronged you? Can you forgive and aid those that caused this whole mess in the first place? Are you the idealist Navi or the realist Hope?

For a moment I wanted to join Hope, really. At least I want to burn that Decil place to the ground even though the rebels are all dead. However, I remembered that if I did join Hope, my heart and soul and the prince I simp so hard, Miya, would be in trouble so I pulled myself back together.

This is Miya. I got a poster of him hanging in my bedroom.

The ending song was real nice and all. The princes went their separate ways… unless, it’s time for a friggin’ second arc! (Which I am too lazy and cannot be bothered to play, although this new character called Flake or something is such a sassy bitch, there’s one line where he said ‘is there something (fuckin’) wrong with these people?’ to a bunch of toxic princes and I was like YES I’ve waited two years for someone to point that out!!!)

And so that’s the gist of it. I got to say, it’s a lot darker than I would expect from a mobile game with such cute aesthetics.

Compared to the anime… I have to say, both had its moments. Kihel’s storyline makes a strong case for the anime version, since it offers an interesting perspective that’s just not a random cult going crazy everywhere. Anime’s biggest downfall is that it just ended, without actually resolving the biggest issue of the plot. (And guess what… Kihel’s story is gonna be part of the game’s main story) There are fillers everywhere, and for most of the time you doubt if they even matter. The heroine’s party seem to be wandering around for no solid purpose for most of the anime, and they’ve just been reacting to whatever the villains throw at them. On the other hand, the game constantly reminds the players that ‘okay, we are fighting to save people along the way, but we’re going to Troymare, okay?’ which gives it all a sense of purpose. However, the way the game’s story mechanics work makes it very annoying to play through and there are loads of fillers (most of it is just one of her teammates saying ‘hey they’re coming’ or ‘let’s go’). Yes, the prince’s individual stories are more focused (they got actual character arcs and shit) than the anime which jumped everywhere, but it took forever to get interesting. The best thing? It actually has an ending.

So that was the gist of Yume100. Thanks for sticking around.
