Amnesia Memories: Shin day 21-25

Recap: Before the amnesia, somebody pushed MC (I’m calling her Marie) down a cliff, and Shin is the most sus. Therefore, the whole crew goes back to the mountains to gather evidence that Shin is innocent.

I have no idea why Shin always sounds like he is talking on 1.25x speed. I checked my settings and there’s nothing wrong. Huh.

Anyway, the group arrived at Shinano. Rika started bickering with Shin, and Toma came in to stop the fight. Rika tried to leave with Ikki, but he and Kent were like ‘why’d you assume Ikki would leave with you?’ Ukyo came along as well, as the final guest.

Shin and Marie had their strategic discussion after arriving at the lodge. Given the circumstances of what happened during the incident, Ukyo wasn’t suspicious although both barely know anything about him.

They started a game night, and everyone was really fired up. Marie had to take a break, so she and Shin went to grab coffee, and they planned to bring some for everyone else too. While brewing coffee, Ukyo came over to them and said some pretty disturbing things (*wink wink* Ukyo route foreshadowing?) to get them back on their guards. Shin doubted if he really should’ve invited Ukyo here.

The next day, the group investigated the incident by repeating their actions on the night it happened. They went in pairs to search along the path during day time, so they could see any missed clues.

Marie went with Shin, Mine, and Ukyo. The latter two went off to check some things, so Shin reenacted the events of that night so that Marie would remember.

The night of the incident, Marie and Shin left their rooms. Shin was frustrated about her treating him the same way as when they were still friends, even though they’re dating. Shin teased her, then she ran off in embarrassment and slipped down the cliff. Shin didn’t push her.

That memory really caused a rift between her and Orion, but in turn, it brought her trust in Shin back. Although Marie recalled how she fell, it just brought even more questions. Who was the ‘real’ culprit, then? And why did she recall Shin finding her?

Later in the evening, everyone regrouped to share info. Kent and Ikki found her bloodstains in two different locations: one where she slid down, and another on a rock a distance away. The group thought she might’ve moved locations in her confusion from the fall.

Kent thought that the culprit came to find her at the bottom of the cliff, then was surprised to see her get up and walk, and so pushed her onto the rock, where she hit her head. That’s probably what the police suspected as well.

Sawa and Toma found even more compelling evidence. They found bloody handprints and confused footprints a distance away, which likely belonged to the culprit. The culprit was probably very upset after committing the crime. However, that evidence was not enough to pinpoint the culprit.

Late at night, Sawa went to the bathroom, but someone tried to push her down the stairs. Shin and Toma were the first at the scene, followed by everyone else. They thought of the possibility that Sawa faked it, but it’s also possible that the culprit tried to get rid of Sawa. (Sawa and Marie were in the same room. The culprit could’ve mistaken Sawa for Marie and so attacked her?)

Marie went to Shin’s room for the night so he could keep watch over her. This happened.

D’aww. Anyway, she recalled that Shin was always protecting her. He might act like he doesn’t care, but in his mind, she and her safety was always first priority. Shin was pretty anxious about another attack throughout the night, but they managed some sleep and survived until morning.

The group had stew for breakfast, and Shin purposely spilled some on Rika’s shoes. He offered to clean everyone’s shoes to make up for it, but while doing that, he asked Marie to take photos of all the shoes so they could compare them with the culprit’s footprints. Before they leave, Toma also suggested that they should take photos of everyone wearing their shoes.

After that’s done, they came back to Tokyo. Marie and Toma went over to Shin’s place for the night. They found out that Shin started playing the bass to join Marie’s band, so Shin got really embarrassed about it.

Shin came in later to ask her whether she figured out who the culprit was. I was kinda at a loss here, so I closed the game and thought about it. I had to write notes like when I was playing Umineko lol.

Let’s recap what we know: MC fell off the cliff by accident. Shin thought of Ukyo’s warning before the whole accident, so he went back to the lodge to get help instead of going to find her.

Nobody acted particularly suspicious during the outing, but the game did mention that there were three people very good at making a poker face: Shin, Toma, and Ikki.

So by process of elimination:

I’m striking Shin off first. It’s true that everything adds up when Shin is the culprit: he had ample time to commit the crime, and could’ve organized the whole trip just to give an illusion that another culprit besides him exists. But, even though he knew where she fell and had time to go down and push her, it didn’t make any sense for him to do it. 1) That would contradict with everything MC knows about him, and 2) he wouldn’t want her to remember. Shin helped MC remember things all this time, but had no power to influence the extent of what she remembers. He wouldn’t gamble on her recalling that the fall was an accident but the head trauma was not. I don’t think he’s the culprit.

Mine and Ukyo went together to search for MC that night. They didn’t know each other, so chance of them cooperating was pretty slim.

The owner did not have any motive for committing the crime. Rika had one in Ikki’s route, but not in this route.

Ikki and Kent were at the lodge, and from what others said, Kent was very quick to find MC and bring her back to the lodge. He wouldn’t have time to throw her onto a rock, wander around with bloody hands, wash the blood off, and come back. Ikki and Kent both had no motive to commit the crime.

That leaves Sawa and Toma, who wandered off alone after hearing that MC fell. Both found the evidence that could frame the culprit, so my guess for the ‘why dunnit’ is based on what I know about their personalities.

Sawa could’ve faked being pushed off the stairs to throw suspicion off herself. She didn’t seem to have anything against MC, though. I couldn’t think of any motive, and I don’t think the story presented any conflicts between her and MC. Shin wouldn’t have let them stay in the same room for the outing otherwise.

On the other hand, I could imagine what Toma’s motive could be. He didn’t get along well with Shin, and is very protective of MC, so if he knew that Shin was partially the reason why she fell yet she protected him, he might’ve gotten angry and accidentally pushed her. He never meant to hurt her, and that would explain the confused footprints and the lack of effort to hide the evidence.

Two things doesn’t add up, though: why would he allow Sawa to find his footprints, and why would he suggest that Shin take photos of everyone with their shoes on?

Those could be explained by the fact that Toma 1) was so confused he didn’t realize he was leaving handprints and footprints everywhere, and so could not stop Sawa from finding them, and 2) was wearing different shoes on this trip, so he didn’t need to worry about his current shoes being compared to the ones he wore on the night of the incident. Or, 3) Toma wanted Shin and MC to figure out that he’s the culprit out of guilt.

So then I picked Toma and see if it would match what Shin was thinking.

But he just said “Hmm.”

The next day, Shin, Toma, and Marie went to a park they used to play in when they were kids. In order to help Marie remember her past, they played their childhood game of Rock Paper Scissor where the loser gets hit on the head with a roll of newspaper. It turned into Shin and Toma just hitting each other in the head without the Rock Paper Scissor part. MC got hit in the head a couple of times along the way as well.

After the fight, Shin went to buy drinks for half an hour, and during that time, Marie kept Toma distracted. Was Shin really just having a hard time finding a store that had melon soda?
