Kuzu no Honkai (Scum’s Wish) Ep 9-12 Review – Goodbye

It was a long first love, but we eventually have to move on.

kuzu no honkai ep 9-1

It turns out Akane said yes after Mugi’s confession and the two have some kind of short-lived relationship. Later, Kanai and Akane went on a trip and the two decided to get married. Kanai was happy despite Akane saying that she will continue seeing other men. Akane has finally found someone who could make her feel things again and cut ties with Mugi. Mugi cries and say that he will remember Evil Akane forever.

Ahhhh Kuzu no Honkai has really good visuals. It brings out the best out of every scene. Akane seems more human after all this, but what I liked most was how Mugi showed all these different sides of him. The part where he said goodbye on the crossing bridge was the most memorable scene in the series for me.

What I don’t get is… what is Kanai thinking? He seems to be into Akane because of his mommy complex (explained with a 5 second flashback), but that shouldn’t be a reason why he would say yes to her seeing other men. Is it his way of saying he will accept her for who she is? Kanai rarely gets to narrate, his part might be removed because of the time limit. If I ever read the manga I’d really like to find out why.

(Akane, sorry, after all this I still can’t bring myself to like you…)

Also, Hanabi is so cruel. Ecchan loves her yet Hanabi insisted on being friends. It’s great they could go back to the way things were in the end, but it wasn’t clear whether Ecchan managed to move on or is she hiding things under her smile.

(For a moment I couldn’t recognize her. I’m like: wait why did they put in a new character at the end?)

In the final episode, Mugi and Hanabi said goodbye to each other and moved on with life.

Although I feel they didn’t wrap up a lot of things, but it was a satisfying conclusion. Thankfully Hanabi didn’t degrade herself to Akane #2 (there are other animes to watch for that), Ecchan’s cousin was just thrown aside, Moka kept loving Mugi, and the two teachers seem to be happily getting married.

Well…Kuzu no Honaki is not something I’d normally watch, but it has a force that kept me going. It shows how love and loneliness drives people, and how bitterness can make a person does stupid things. While it’s like a personification of emo teen feelings, it has artistic visuals that carries those feelings to the audience. Yeah, I’m trying to sound really professional here. Overall, it was bitter but uplifting. You can be sad and lonely, but eventually, you will gain the strength move on.
