Dororo Ep. 4-6 Review – in fields of gold

I knew it was coming! I totally knew it was coming but… *sobs*

1/4 through the series, Hyakkimaru gets his voice and hearing back. This poses a problem since the guy hates his own voice (like we all do) and is on the brink of succumbing to the dark side had Dororo not stopped him.

Episode 4 wasn’t much, it’s just a setup for the next episode and wasn’t particularly emotional. Or maybe I was too distracted by the brother’s eyebrows.

Episodes 5 and 6 were leaps in Hyakkimaru’s development. It’s the first time he ever has some form of connection to someone, and the first time he gave something resembling a smile. Now Hyakkimaru departs on a journey to reclaim the rest of his body parts while resisting his innate demons. And hey, it’s the first time the guy speaks. I wished the scene was a bit longer, because I sat there going like ‘wait did he just talk?’ Dororo also got his…her…their…fair share of backstory too. Mio has good chemistry with both of them.

The Mio chapters are so heartbreaking precisely because they had dreams and their dreams were crushed. Had they lived in despair, all this wouldn’t be so crushing. Still, there is no denying that their field of golden stalks are beautiful, no matter how fleeting it was was.

And now I can’t figure out how Hyakkimaru bend his elbows when they’re swords. There are some scenes where it’s clear that the swords just poke out of his arms when he bends them, but how the heck do they go back in without making a huge slit?

Yet some more great episodes. Keep them coming, MAPPA!
