Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya Ep. 4-5 Review – Saints of Athena

Jabu: Am I a joke to you?

And also I laughed so hard when I saw this running six minutes into episode five:

Let us now storm Area 51. With the power of friendship and Cosmo. They can’t stop the Saints of Athena!

So I thought that Ikki’s badassery in this version is going to make me overlook the mess they made with Shun’s characterization, but uh… not really. The author’s attempt to make Shun a ‘strong independent female character’ is going to backfire. I can feel it. And her defensive fighting is sort of inconsistent.

Proudly announcing that Shun is now a generic female lead of an action cartoon instead of the progressive effeminate male lead he/she was some thirty years ago. *claps*

Also, Jabu is a complete joke. They gave him so much speaking line and he didn’t even get half a minute to shine. What the heck. That battle was a joke. If they’d just extend that battle a bit more, Jabu could’ve brought something to equal the amount of talking he’s done for the past like, two or three episodes.

So apparently Knights of the Zodiac is about the power of friendship saving Athena and the world. Okay. Fine.

The fights were really bland. I don’t know if it’s because I’m too old or the old version was too intense, but the fights seem like they have no stake at all. Even when the Gold Cloth was stolen by Ikki, the only person who even gives a damn is Saori. The thing is, so far we have no context on how powerful this Gold Cloth is. The only scene we have is that part where Aioria kidnapped Seika, where he used his attack to bring down a helicopter. However, the Bronze Saints can also do that with ease, so how much more powerful are these Gold Cloths anyway so that everyone’s fussing all over it? Moreover, with the pace that the episodes are moving, we know they’re going to get the Cloth back in the next few episodes anyway, and there’s no suspense.

Also, apparently this is all about prophecy vs. technology but so far Guraad’s army has been an absolute joke, yet he said he’s going to defeat the gods and take destiny in mankind’s hands? Yeah dude, very convincing.

And what the heck is up with Seiya and Shiryu? When Hyouga said ‘Oh yeah Saori’s the reincarnation of Athena’ and they’re like ‘*gasp*’ and I’m like… wait, so do you know or not know that she’s Athena? What have you been fighting for so far, hmm?

But that knighting scene was good. I forgive you.

So far the characters are so bland. I feel like they should do more with Shun. Saori’s still flat. Hyouga has some potential with that one scene where he puts a flower for his mom. Also, the scene after Seiya defeated Cassios and said something along the line of “you were a true warrior” kind of contradicts with how his character has been set up in the previous episodes, at least in my opinion. Yeah, in six years that whiny kid became a prime follower of the warrior’s code. Probably it’s character development. Probably no one even cares.

Uhhhh so there’s one more episode to go. Okay, this thing’s been alright so far. A college girl is not their intended target audience so I don’t wanna nitpick too much. It’s good for what it is. I just don’t understand the PG13+ rating this thing has even though there’s not a single drop of blood or a single curse word anywhere.
